Wagner-Stempel

The Wagner family has been involved in wine production now for nine generations, and since the early 1990s Daniel Wagner is responsible for the vineyards and the cellar. All of the grapes are estate grown, organic, hand-picked, naturally fermented and with no additives except for a little SO2.

The vineyards are some of the highest in elevation in Rheinhessen. Established in 1845, Wagner Stempel is now well into its ninth generation of family stewardship. Daniel Wagner has lowered yields through far-reaching measures - manual pruning and canopy management as well as selective hand-picking in the autumn are corner-posts of his philosophy of wine production, which is based on the principle that outstanding wines are made in the vineyard.

“Wagner-Stempel is one of my favourite producers in the Rheinhessen because the wines of Daniel Wagner are unique: they are clear like a mountain stream, crystalline, fresh and mineral as if they came from the Nahe… fascinatingly precise, pure and elegant and there are hardly any better village wines in the region than the Riesling trio from Wagner-Stempel.”
STEPHAN REINHARDT, The Wine Advocate

Daniel Wagner along with his manager, the self-titled "Swiss Army Knife" (because he "does" vines, cellar and sales), Ollie Mueller are on fire. We have been importing these for well over 10 years but in the last few years they have jumped several levels in quality, density, capacity to age, plus hedonistic and intellectual interest. With the whole range of wines being estate-grown and organic, plus emphasis on pristine fruit with judicious crushing of fruit pre-pressing and large-barrel fermentation, these are characterful wines with amazing class. The (rather large) holdings of Grand Cru Heerkretz make wine that cascades down through the range of Rieslings, resulting in cuvees that punch way, way above their weight. These are now Rieslings with significant textural grip and mouth-filling richness, all while delivering finesse and minerality too. They are Rhinehessens bordering on Nahes, both geographically and stylistically. Cheers, Randall.
